B.B. KING, LIVE AT MONTREUX 1993B.B. KING, LIVE AT MONTREUX 1993
Eagle Rock, June 2009

At the time B.B. was then 68-years old. In traditional B.B. form he was interactive and was feeding off of the crowds love, singing his heart out and bending those notes on his Gibson, Lucille. With his smokin’-hot big band behind him punctuating every wiggle of his ample torso with staccato horn blasts, B.B. spans the gamut of blues. Besides traditional B.B. tasty fretwork and soulful vocals, he was backed with a big band with horns and organ, each had plenty of opportunity to add some R&B’esque funk to the evening. There was some swing, lots of solos and lots of Lucille’s beautiful vibrato singing in.

The 17-song 99-minute DVD features:
1) Fanfare
2) Six Pack
3) Two I Shoot Blues
4) BB King intro
5) Let The Good Times Role
6) When It All Comes Down (I’ll Still Be Around)
7) Chains of Love
8) Caldonia
9) All Over Again
10) Since I Met You Baby
11) Playing With My Friends
12) Ain’t Nobody Home
13) Why I Sing The Blues
14) Blues Man
15) Rock Me Baby
16) Please Accept My Love
17) The Thrill Is Gone

Here’s some history on B.B. if ever asked at trivia night. In 1949 he hitchhiked to Memphis as a teenager where he was tutored by his cousin, blues legend Bukka White. After Sonny Boy Williamson gave him his start on the radio, B.B. toured the south, naming his guitar Lucille after a woman who was the cause of a fight and an arson in Twist, Arkansas (where B.B. went running into the burning building to save his beloved guitar).

I absolutely loved this DVD, never bored and wanted more. I enjoyed the added horn section and key’s. The bass player had a couple of very cool, tasteful solos and the drummer was consistent throughout. While B.B. is in his eighties now he remains a vibrant and charismatic live performer. B.B. King has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux Jazz Festival, performing there 19 times and is scheduled there again for the summer of ‘09. Wow! B.B. is not just the ambassador of blues – this DVD proves him to be the King too. This 1993 concert will surely rank as one of his finest at any venue. He has a superb backing band and a great set list it’s a must for any blues fan. This DVD get’s an easy 5.0 on the coveted STLBluesometer. BUY THIS DVD!
