John
Lee Hooker – Hooker, Boxed Set
{2006 – Shout Factory}
85
songs on 4 CD’s is a great presentation box
highlighting the late great John Lee Hooker. Born
near Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1917 to a sharecropper
family, John Lee Hooker was one of the last links
to the blues of the deep South. He moved to Detroit
in the early 1940's and by 1948 had scored his first
number-one jukebox hit and million-seller, "Boogie
Chillen." Other hits soon followed, "I'm
In The Mood," "Crawling Kingsnake,"
and "Boom Boom" among the biggest. In
1991, John Lee was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll
Hall of Fame. On September 11, 1997 he received
a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and on October
3rd, 1997. JLH lived a full life as a professional
bluesman until his death in 2001. JLH inspired many,
performed with many.
Personally, I enjoyed all four CD’s, especially
disc four that had a lot of friends joining him;
Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison,
Ry Cooder, John Hammond, Jimmie Vaughan, Charles
Brown, Los Lobos and Eric Clapton. The other CD’s
had a few joint collaborations; Texas Slim and Canned
Heat. I really enjoyed the three songs “Let’s
Make It”, “King Of The World”
and “I’m Bad Like Jesse James”
that were recorded live. A couple of songs appear
a couple of times, with and without guests. Disc
one starts with John Lee’s “Boogie Chillen”
done in 1948 acoustic. As a treat disc four ends
with the same song done up electric with Eric Clapton.
Again, I enjoyed it all. The song “Tupelo”
took me for a joyful ride thru the blues. Wow, what
a treasure!
This
my friends is a diamond in the ruff!
