Coco
Montoya - Dirty Deal
{Alligator Records, 2007}
---------------------------------------
He
was a drummer first in life, raised on rock and roll,
and then he became a blues guitarist (left handed,
by the way). He played with Albert Collins, John Mayall
(The Blind Pig album in 1995) and won the WC Handy
for best new blues artist in the mid nineties.
Now, here he is with a new eleven cut CD called “Dirty
Deal” on the beloved Alligator label. I am unable
to find the supporting cast of musicians for this
CD, but they are great and very solid.
TRACK
LIST:
1 – Last Dirty Deal – Rockin’
right outa the box this is a great R&B leadoff.
2 – Three Sides To Every Story – Great
words on a cool beat, and nice licks.
3 – Love Gotcha – Back on the rockin’
beat with a great bass line.
4 – How Do You Sleep At Night? – Solid,
funky, get down, blues cut. Busy for a ballad.
5 – It Takes Time – Nice shuffle beat
under some great guitar work by Coco.
6 – It’s My Own Tears – Grab a
beer and groove with this old soundin’ blues.
7 – Coin Operated Love – Very cool song
and again well put together.
8 – Clean Slate – Most conventional
song on the CD but a good R&B track.
9 – Put The Shoe On The Other Foot –
Outstanding beat and rhythm.
10 – It’s Your Fault – Finish
the beer on this heavy mojo blues cut.
11 – Ain’t no Brakeman – Wrap
it up on a tight bass line solid blues groove.
I
hadn’t heard of Coco until I reviewed this
CD. His drum experience is evident on the variety
of beat styles and position of the rhythm section
on each of these cuts. The beat isn’t overpowering
but it does drive the songs, as I believe it should.
On top of this lay the tight solid guitar licks,
and there you have it, a CD in which each cut is
a stand-alone honey of a song. Not often do I hear
a CD where I like every cut but this one is such
a CD so it gets a very tight 4.9 on the STLBluesometer.
Thanks.......Later
