Ike
Turner & The Kings of Rhythm - Here and
Now
{2001 | IKON Records}
This
is Ike Turners long awaited release that is
reminiscent of some of his early stuff with
Howlin' Wolf. On this gem of a blues CD Ike
plays both guitar and piano while singing. "Rocket
88" was originally released in 1951 and
now finds its way home as the tenth track on
this eleven song collection.
You
can sometimes catch Ike playing at the
Sparta Blues Festival. He's got a star on
the St. Louis Walk of Fame and is an inductee
of the Rock Hall of Fame.

The
tracks are:
1. "Tore Up" - electric blues guitar
and big band horn sound
2. "Baby's Got It" - a piano blues
instrumental, great track
3. "You Can't Winnum' All" - lots
of guitar bending, piano boogie woogie and slow
vocals
4. "Ike's Theme" - simply put, its
a smokin', head bobbin' tune
5. "Catfish Blues" - how bout some
'Cornbread' with that Catfish? A bit of a Delta
sound. Tasty blues morsel with classic piano
blues shuffle
6. "Give You What You Wanted" - decent
blues song, would have liked guitar up front
and vocal in back, maybe less horn
7. "I Need A-Nuddin'" - not sure what
the heck 'a-nuddin' is but its sound like I
need one too! Pretty good song, I'd prefer more
guitar/piano and less horns on this one too
8. "Swanee River Boogie" - I love
it, this song has spousal approval, a cool piano
boogie instrumental
9. "Feelin' Low Down" - This is a
modern blues song, good beat and muted guitar
10. "Rocket 88" - greeaaat! I dug
the piano, vocals, melody and sax
11. "Cold Day In Hell" - another winner.
Nearly seven minutes of really good piano, harmonica,
and guitar
Hopefully
we won't have to wait as long for Ike's next
album.
Ciao'
for now, peace.
