The
Band - The Last Waltz
1978 Martin Scorsese Film Collection Martin
Scorsese's 1978 history of The Band from their start
in 1960 as Levon and the Hawks the group's last
concert in 1976 at San Francisco’s “Winterland”
performance. Super casual interviews with Band members,
particularly lead man Robbie Robertson.. But the
film's real hook is the stage show, and great music
featuring a rotation of rock legends (Van Morrison,
Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil
Young, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters,
The Staples, Ringo, Ron Wood, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins
and of course the man they backed for many years
Bob Dylan) playing with the Band before a wildly
appreciative audience.
The DVD contains previously
unreleased "jam footage" featuring The
Band and concert guests such as Clapton, Ringo,
Neil Young, the Rolling Stones' Ron Wood, Dr. John,
and Stephen Stills. There are interviews with The
Band members drummer/vocalist Levon Helm, very interesting
keyboardist Garth Hudson, bassist/vocalist Rick
Danko, of course lead guitar/vocalist Jamie “Robbie”
Robertson as well as concert guests, former front
man Ronnie Hawkins and Mavis Staples, and various
crew members and journalists. There are some very
personal insights into the dynamics of “life
on the road” and why The Band” retired.
The Band was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994.
A very well deserved recognition.
This DVD is available in
a couple of packages as a single or as a set of
4. Both are great - you cannot go wrong. Gator gives
his first ever 5.0 on the STLBluesometer.
