Greetings fellow Blues connoisseurs!
Pull up your favorite porch chair and break out
a pitcher of Mint Juleps, ‘cause we are headed
for a lazy summer afternoon in the Delta. This offering
from our Canadian Blues brother, Paul Reddick, eases
you into an era gone by. You can almost feel the
humidity in the air as he spins some great old blues
stylings. Close your eyes and Track 5 “Waves”
could almost convince you that Robert Johnson was
still recording! Musically, this is a very sound
album with a great mix of acoustic, electric and
harp. Paul’s voice has an ease and familiar
quality, like that of your favorite t-shirt or jeans.
Tracks:
1. Winter Birds – lazy afternoon
jam
2. Big Not Small – tasty
harp tune with some funky voice effects
3. Villanelle – title track,
somewhat sleepy & more country than blues
4. Luck in Love – a definite
to toe tapper, gotta’ love that harp
5. Waves – Robert, is that
you?!?!
6. So Long, Thank You, Goodbye
– cute little whimsical song
7. Round This Time of Year –
one of the few electric songs on this album, lots
of feeling
8. Five Silver Dollars –
awesome vocals and some great guitar pickin’
9. Six was the Six – another
electric jam
10. Hooks in the Water –
definitely different
11. Blue Eventide – music
and background vocals give this song that old gospel
feel
12. Stone of Indigo – cool
voice harmonies
13. Burning Fuse – can you
feel it yet?
14. Dog Catcher – right out
of the delta, from the dog’s point of view
15. Some Afternoon Alone –
the guitar parts make this song
Overall a sound album, for the Hitman
it rates a 2.5 on the STLBluesometer.
Remember,
you don’t need to be blue to appreciate the
Blues, ‘til next time,
