Oliver
Sain - Soul Serenade
{2001 | Vanessa Records}
This
jazzy CD was Oliver's last prior to his death
October 28, 2003. Besides being a staple in
the St. Louis Music community and a major influence
on many careers, Sain left us with 14 tracks
full of feeling (including seven originals,)
his saxophone is full and rich, the ivories
are singing. Johnnie
Johnson sits in on songs 2 and 5. Marsha
Evans takes on the vocals on songs 8 and 13,
while Kim
Massie adds her talents on song 10. It's
no wonder why Oliver Sain was known as the 'The
Man with the Golden Horn'. On this recording
Sain did vocals, sax, keyboards, organ, vibes,
alto sax, tenor sax, keyboard bass and programmed
drum machine.
Songs:
1. Feel Like Dancing - is an R&B remix of
the classic song with some electric blues guitar.
2. Jookin'- is a swingin instrumental starting
out with keyboards and half way through we get
some blues guitar and piano shuffle.
3. Nite Dancer - instrumental jazz tune highlighting
the saxophone
4. On the Hill - is another instrumental jazz
tune.
5. Stop Breaking Down - is a new rendition of
the Robert Johnson song. Sains vocals are excellent,
I love the piano blues.
6. Soul Serenade - this is Oliver Sains signature
tune; take in every morsel during the 7 minutes
of the sax and organ - thanks Oliver!
7. P.J.'s Groove - is a mellow tune, put this
on, light the candles, poor the wine and sit
with your gal or guy on the couch and enjoy.
8. Let's Stay Together - very minimal vocals
add that perfect combination to the sax and
organ throughout the song.
9. Where I'm Bound - is a little too mellow
for my liking.
10. High Heel Sneakers/Slip In Mules - this
and #5 are my two favorites tunes on this disc.
This song has song has attitude.
11. Saving All My Love for You, and Ruby Red
(12) - are nice easy on the ears jazz tunes
13.
You Make Me Fell Brand New - is primarily instrumental
with minimal vocals like number 8.
14. Ca Purange - has some traces of electric
blues guitar, I guess I'd say this is my third
favorite song.
Note
this is not a blues CD but an outstanding jazz
CD, not one I would recommend listening to real
loud from your car, but rather listen at home
with that significant person.
