Jimmy
Dawkins – Tell Me Baby
{2004 | Fedora Records}
Recorded July 27 & 28, 2003
Fast
Fingers himself is at home playing the blues,
his first (of about a dozen recordings) came
out in the late sixties. I’d compare
Dawkins to the likes of a combination of Stevie
Ray or Melvin Taylor. From the beginning of
the first song I get the blues – that’s
Chicago blues y’all, done up Jimmy Dawkins
style. There is no pause in the mojo from
the first track to the second. Add the organ
to the clean guitar vibratos and distorted
vocals made 'Falling Tears' one of my favorite
songs on the CD. Kotten Field Jump is an electric
blues lullaby that is just so sweet on the
ears. Every blues CD needs an instrumental,
they should only be this good. Mean O’Blues
has plenty o’guitar, gritty vocals and
a solid bass shuffle to it. I really liked
that song as well. Guitar King is a bit funkier
than the others. Mid Nite Boogy has a bit
of swing to it. The remaining tracks hold
their own with electric guitar licks and vocals
that exude the feeling that make this a must-have
blues CD. Tell Me Baby has ten hardcore blues
tracks. I liked the CD, it’s no wonder
Jimmy Dawkins has been around for about forty
years.
