ROOMFUL
OF BLUES – STANDING ROOM ONLY
{2005 | Alligator}
OK y’all, you can say you heard about
it first at STLBlues. The release date for Standing
Room Only is January 11, 2005.
Roomful of Blues 18th album entitled "Standing
Room Only" is the follow-up to the
Grammy nominated "That's Right"!
Roomful of Blues has been combining the big
band of 40’s and 50’s with a bluesy/R&B
sound that’s all their own for 37 years.
The fourteen high energy, boppin’ tunes
consist of both covers and originals. Just try
not to bob your head and snap your fingers.
1. She Put A Spell On Me –
super fast singing and bass playing remake of
Oliver Sains song.
2. Can’t Stand You No More
– excellent song, my choice for best song
on CD.
3. Boomerang – a fast
paced tune with country-esque vocals.
4. The Love You Lost On The Way
– outstanding guitar
5. Just Keep On Rockin’
– a quick combination of rockabilly and
40’s big band boppin’ blues. It
was a bit jungle sounding with the drums followed
by a killer horn solo.
6. Two For The Price Of Ten
– I dug this song, plenty of piano boogie
woogie. Nice harmonica blowin’.
7. Straight Jacquet –
a horny instrumental.
8. Sufferin’ With The Blues
– a slower sexy ballad.
9. Jona Lee – a fast
shuffle, swing.
10. My Mind Is Troubled –
this song kinda’ reminded me of Messin’
with the King. I like organ solos, this one
was great.
11. Love Grown Cold –
a catchy blues tune
12. Flip Flap Jack –
a fun song, one that will stick with you long
after you’ve shelved this CD.
13. Up Jumped The Devil –
I liked the song. However, the lyrics and vocals
did not really match the music. Maybe gritty
guitar and less horns on this song would be
better.
14. Nobody Knows – this
song features the deep soulful vocals of guitarist
Chris Vachon, it’s a bit slower than most
of the songs almost Rat Packish. I enjoyed this
track.
Back
Row: Jason Corbiere, drums; Bob Enos,
trumpet; Rich Lataille, Tenor & Alto Sax;
Mark Earley, Baritone & Tenor Sax.
Middle: Chris Vachon, guiar & barckground
vocals (lead on 14); Mark DuFresne, lead &
background vocals, horminica.
Front: Travis Colby, piano & Hammond
B3, Brad Hallen, bass.
Standing
Room Only is dedicated to the memory
of their departed brother Porky
Cohen.
This
is a pretty good CD. I preferred songs: Can’t
Stand You No More, Sufferin’ With The
Blues and The Love You Lost On The Way. Checking
the bluesometer, the rating is a solid 4.007.
Ciao'
for now, peace.
