Last
night I had the pleasure of spending the evening
with the Neville Brothers at the freshly reopened
Roberts Orpheum Theater. The venue is perfect
for attending a concert, it’s got old
fashioned charm and of the 1,400 seats I don’t
think there is a bad one. My daughter joined
me as we watched and listened to the legendary
Nevilles; Art, Charles, Aaron and Cyril. As
part of the nine person band there was at least
one newer generation of the Nevilles (Ivan)
performing as well. The show opened with a quick
rendition of The Funky Meters “Cissy Strut”,
followed by some old songs and some new ones
from their 2004 release “Walkin’
In The Shadows Of Life”. These guys originally
from Nawlins’ blended bluesy solos, funkafied
dance grooves and infused R&B songs with
plenty of soul. Aaron performed a couple of
his well known ballads and added loads of soul
and sensitivity. He’s at the top of his
game and has never sounded better. Brother Charles
was absolutely incredible on the sax, with long,
smooooth solos. At one point there was a call
and response between Charles on sax and their
lead guitarist. My daughter said it was “very
cool” and I agree.
