Mark
Knopfler Concert – Indianapolis, IN
{7/14/2005}
Mama
and I made our first road trip of the summer.
We were able to go to Indianapolis and see Mark
Knopfler at the Murat Theater. Wow what a show!
Knopfler (singer/songwriter/guitarist) was incredible.
He was accompanied by a five person band; Richard
Bennett – guitar, Jim Cox and Guy Fletcher
– keys, Glenn Worf – bass, Chad
Cromwell – drums.
Knopfler
gave his guitar tech a pretty good workout;
he must have used ten different guitars throughout
his 2-hour show that included multiple standing
ovations and two encores. I enjoyed the accordion
accompaniment for various songs. I was expecting
all new stuff from Shangri-La (2004 release
and name of concert) and other newer releases.
There was some new stuff and a lot of old Dire
Straits, including songs that date back to 1977.
In
all, it was a Mark Knopfler “best of,
greatest hits” show, one I am hoping will
be released on DVD. I would describe the music
as Chet Atkins influenced blues-rock and bluegrass.
Vocals were easily recognizable as the classic
Knopfler gruff. Now to his guitar playing; he
finger-picked from start-to-finish, there were
long, perfect guitar solos in every song filled
with vibratos, chickin’ pickin’
and quick blues licks. It was some the best
guitar playing I’ve heard.
My
recommendation; catch the show if you can and
hope for a DVD release. This humble man is an
incredibly talented musician and put on one
of the best concerts I’ve ever been too.
Ciao’
for now, peace.
