"Big Daddy" Stallings - One Night
Lover
{2004 | B-Town Records}
Urban
blues originals with a contemporary twist, 13-tracks
by Baltimore guitarist-singer-songwriter, Charles
"Big Daddy" Stallings. Stallings,
the trucker-turned-music man presents the music
world with his debut album, forty-years in the
making.
I
liked that it was a diverse mix of blues styles
as well as some non-blues styles. There will
have to be at least one song that will appeal
to anybody. Now that's value for your CD dollar.
1.
One Night Lover - big band piano swing
with sweet supporting vocals, the highlight
was Stallings singing.
2. I Got The Blu-Hoos - loads of harmonica
over a bluesy Muddy Waters shuffle.
3. B-3 Blues - as you'd guess by the
title it's an upbeat Hammond B-3 blues instrumental,
and I liked it.
4. Gettin' Old - gruff vocals, some piano
blues.
5. Swing - is a swingin' swing ditty
with horns and a bit of funk.
6. 4x4 Woman - 6 and ½ minutes
of slow burnin' harmonica blowin' blues. A killer
song.
7. Sophisticated - cleaned up instrumental
with dominant harmonica and jazzy piano playing.
8. Hobbsville Blues - over ten minutes
of blues funk, just the way Cornbread likes
it.
9. Funky Farm - funked up, very cool
bass lines.
10. Soul Rock 'n Roll - more funk with
guitar and horns.
11. She Devil - a fast paced piano track
with a lot of bass. Oh yea!
12. The Rub - really more of a dance
tune.
13. Thank You, Jesus - some gospel revival,
even has baritone vocals.
Not
an all blues CD, it was enjoyable though. My
favorite tracks were I Got The Blu-Hoos, B-3
Blues, 4x4 Woman and She Devil. Rating: 3.57.
Ciao'
for now, peace.
