For me it was
like returning to the skating rink where I first learned
to roller skate—Circus Roller Rink, 1944-45?
But instead of skating, I was dancing!!! Hip Pocket,
the warm up group, is always a favorite in the Blgtn/Normal
area. Played Chicago style to MoTown, Country plus
a great tribute to the Crescent City. Back step a
bit…we arrived around 7:10 and had to park in
the back parking lot!!!! Upon entering, almost every
table was filled or reserved. We arrived with the
temperature at 14` F and left at 6`---didn’t
deter any of us! I felt like I was at a “home
game” where everyone there personally knew the
hometown pitcher and that he knew everyone in the
crowd. Fresh from his Grammy, Delbert packed the dance
floor—very difficult not to dance! He definitely
made the audience feel like he was singing & playing
to each of us individually---and he did dedicate songs
to people in attendance….to Jan: “Never
Known Love so Strong”(I would have thought it
was me if I hadn’t known better), “Like
to Listen to Rock & Roll, but like to Two Step,
Too”!!!! I felt that he has the ability to make
a personal relationship with each member of his audience!
Coming straight from Nashville, Delbert complained
about the frigid weather but proceeded to warm the
crowd with great blues!
