The 2009 Baby Blues Showcase
By
Big Dave
Every year there's a special event held here in St. Louis, celebrating the next generation of music talent keeping the Blues and Jazz alive. It's called the Baby Blues Showcase, and it's the brainchild of Jeremy Segel-Moss. When Jeremy isn't busy organizing this annual event, you'll find him out performing as a founding member of the Bottoms Up Blues Gang!
This years showcase, according to Jeremy, was one of the best ever! Judging from the crowd on hand for a Sunday evening, we'd have to agree! In addition to promoting the youth of St. Louis music, the BBS also served as a food drive, with canned food being donated to the Jewish Family & Children's Service!
This years talent included Ms. Emily Nicole, the Rum Drum Ramblers, Brown Bottle Fever, the Baby Blues All-Stars (Derek Bonn, Aaron Griffin, Joe Valenza, Big Mike Aguirre, Matt McCallister), Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers, and Big Mike Aguirre's band. Interesting fact on the Baby Blues All-Stars - with the exception of Big Mike Aguirre, the band was all 2nd generation Bluesmen!
Staffers from KDHX Radio - the finest community radio station in the land - were on hand throughout the evening. The women of St. Louis Sound - Becca & Sam - were also on the scene to help run the raffle and numerous prize giveaways, and working the door was none other than songstress Kari Liston of the Bottoms Up Blues Gang. Artist / Blues Historian Kevin Belford was on hand to sign copies of his
in-depth book on St. Louis Pre-War Blues, 'Devil at the Confluence'. The gang from the Blues City Deli - Vinnie Valenza and staff - were there to support Joe Valenza, and Molly R. of Earthdance was on hand, letting the music move her. The Duck Club Yacht Club, a sponsor of this event, made a strong presence, and Beatle Bob even made the scene, marking it as an 'official happening'!
It was only fitting that this event is held in one of St. Louis' finest music rooms, BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups. If you missed this years show, you missed a great one. Performance schedules for all these bands can be found in the Live Music Calendar of STLBlues, or on MySpace, so please get out and support them and the live music of St. Louis!
Sponsors for this years showcase included KDHX Radio, the Duck Club Yacht Club, and STLBlues.net.
