Benoit, Debbie Davies, and Kenny Neal
HOMESICK FOR THE ROAD.
By
Tom Baeur
This
summer, film director Martin Scorsese presented a 7-night
musical journey. The blues! How does it continue on
for so many years? How to "pass the torch"
and keep the blues alive..
These three have accepted the challenge put together
a great cd. They sound as if they have been together
since they were in grade school.
Kenny Neals vocals sound like he has years of
experience, delivering that great warm tones
that makes you feel like you are in the heart
of the blues delta. His guitar work is excellent.
He can take you from the soft, articulate leads
to powerful attacks and bends that stir the
soul.
Debbie Davies puts together a tremendous slow, acoustic
balled, "So Cold"
Starts out vocals, and acoustic, then breaks
into the great Chicago style blues with big
bass, drums, and an electric guitar. Masterfully
engineered, modern sound.
Tab Benoit performs, "Put a spell on you".
This song suites his style very well. A very
soulful blues number. The arrangement allows
him plenty of room to improvise, with the keyboards
laying down the rhythm. His leads are fierce,
and powerful.
The three of them take turns with the vocal
tracks. They share the lead and rhythm guitar
parts nicely. This cd has it all from rock you,
to slow soulful 12 bar blues. Wonderful tones
from the strat guitars and excellent studio
work make this a great CD to experience.
