Tinsley Ellis - HIGHWAYMANTinsley Ellis - HIGHWAYMAN
{2005 | Alligator Records}

Returning to the Alligator label for this, his 10th studio album, this is a powerful live performance recorded at Chord on Blues in St. Charles, IL. The man eats, sleeps and lives the blues through and through. His raw vocals and righteous guitar licks will blow you away. Tinsley Ellis has performed in all 50 U.S. states and in 18 foreign countries. Tinsley has spent on average, over 200 days on the road per year since the 1980’s. He is A HIGHWAYMAN.

Tinsley Ellis – Guitar and Vocals
Todd Hamric – Keyboards and Background Vocals
The Evil One – Bass and Background Vocals
Jeff Burch – Drums

1. INTRODUCTION – Live Introduction

2. TO THE DEVIL FOR A DIME - slow start but the guitar gets you wanting more

3. HIGHWAYMAN - wha wha peddle wows and reminded me of some Hendrix licks

4. A QUITTER NEVER WINS – Rips into the blues from beginning to end

5. REAL BAD WAY - upbeat and full of da’ blues

6. HELL OR HIGH WATER - hard driving song about a woman

- a little fancy piano impresses on this one

8. THE LAST SONG - slow soulful tune with a long soulful guitar solo, nice!

9. LEAVIN’ HERE - crowd involvement and the guitar slinger pleases here

10. PAWNBROKER - groovy organ and guitar work

11. THE AXE - another gem that starts slow and gets your blood boiling with guitar licks

12. DOUBLE EYED WHAMMY - a whammy of a song with great keys and guitar

This is an enjoyable cd for a fan of some hard driving blues and gritty guitar work. I give this disc 4.0 out of 5 on my STLBluesometer rating. Go check them out yourself live or on the web at: www.tinsleyellis.com
