Kim "Festival Junkie" WelshBy Kim "Festival Junkie" Welsh

Yesterday, 10/28/09, was such a beautiful day! A Second Line led by the illustrious Maestro Clint Maedgen, featuring members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band was staged as part of the local underground feature film "Flood Streets" celebrating the defiantly life-affirming culture of New Orleans in general and the Bywater in particular. The setting was the Mardi Gras after Katrina.
"Flood Streets" tells the story of a diverse bunch of artists and misfits seeking love, money, creative fulfillment, electricity, gas and marijuana in the Fall of 2006. The movie stars Becky Stark (singer with The Decemberists, Lavender Diamond) and features Harry Shearer of "The Simpsons" and Spinal Tap (and many other Christopher Guest films).
The procession started with a crew of noise-making clowns, led by our muse Dischordia (local musician/artist Alma Maleckar) and members of Noisician Coaltion. The infectious theme song of the Second Line was "Just a Little While to Stay Here" and I still can't get it out of my head!

The chorus was as follows:
Just a little while to stay here
Just a little while to wait
Just a little while to labor
In the path that's always straight
Just a little more of troubles
In this low and sinful state
Then we'll enter heaven's portals
Sweeping through those pearly gates

After the second line, I went to the New Orleans Blues Festival to support the 2nd District Police Force where Rockin' Dopsie performed and an Indian from the Warriors Flame gang danced in front of the Soul Rebels Brass Band.

Headed over to catch the lacklustre Krewe of Boo and then to Mimi's to have coffee at Flora's awaiting the last stop of the 6t9 parade with the Pony Girls! Then to Sidearm Gallery to sample Fringe shows that will be at the New Orleans Fringe Festival in November... and an after-party at the Skull Club! Enjoy!

Resting and cringing as I watch my Saints today!
