JJ
Grey and Mofro open for Galactic at the Pageant |
It's
always a
fun event whenever an 'unknown to you' band
just blows the room away. That's just what happened
on Feb. 19th at the
Pageant here in St. Louis,
when JJ
Grey and Mofro opened up for Galactic. The
first clue to how popular this show was going
to be was finding the parking lot already full
upon our arrival!
A live show offers something you just don't
get on vinyl, CD or download, and that's the
energy that goes from the stage to the crowd,
and back again. This was evident from the start,
as JJ Grey led this power band with his soul-drenched
vocals, and ever so tasteful guitar work. The
back and forth musical exchanges between JJ,
his horn section and big Hammond B3 sound were
a definite crowd pleaser.
Like Florida’s state flower, the orange
blossom, musician JJ Grey’s songs are
fascinating, beautiful, and complex. Both are
products of the same ground: the rich, fertile
and ancient soil of the Sunshine State. Born
and raised just outside of Jacksonville, Florida,
Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern
musical storytellers and, like the best of the
great Southern writers, he fills his songs with
details that are at once vivid and personal,
political and universal. His multi-textured
music overflows with dynamic rhythms and thought-provoking
lyrics. From raw funk to deep soul, blues and
rock, JJ and his band Mofro deliver both devastating
live and recorded performances.
Following JJ Grey and Mofro to the stage was
the
New Orleans funk of Galactic.
It's hard to beat the sound of big brass, and
those on hand witmessed some of the best around,
as Galatic was joined by several members of
the Rebirth Brass Band. With the release of
their sixth album, From the Corner to the Block,
the five-man group GALACTIC - drummer Stanton
Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonist/harmonica
player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel,
and guitarist Jeff Raines - reaffirm their standing
as one of the funkiest outfits in the known
universe. The band started out
over a decade ago as an instrumental act in
the tradition of the Meters, the JB's, and Booker
T. & the MG's - bands equally comfortable
recording their own material or working with
vocalists.
A great show, we recommend you NEVER miss the
chance to see either band!
