Ian
Gillian – One Eye To Morocco
Eagle Records – March 2009
100% rock album from the
legendary Deep Purple vocalist (Black Sabbath too),
Ian Gillian conjures up a variety from classic Gillan
rock to the Arabic sound of the title track plus
slower soulful ballads and bluesy mid-tempo rockers.
One Eye to Morocco is Ian Gillan's first album of
original solo material since 1997's Dreamcatcher.
The musicians backing Gillian
are top notch - Guitarist Michael Lee Jackson, Bassist
Rodney Appleby, Drummer Howard Wilson, Joe Menonna
on saxophone and Keyboard duties are shared across
the album by Lance Anderson and Jesse O'Brien.
The
tracks are:
1. One Eye To Morocco
2. No Lotion For That
3. Don’t Stop
4. Change My Ways
5. Girl Goes To Show
6. Better Days
7. Deal With It
8. Ultimate Groove
9. Sky Is Falling Down, The
10. Texas State Of Mind
11. It Would Be Nice
12. Always The Traveller
I
like it! It’s rock; crisp and clear, sometimes
mellow, a far cry from one of foremost vocalists
of the heavy metal. Good lyrics – love One
Eye To Morocco, I often sit waiting for no one to
call and The Sky Is Falling Down. I like the bits
of guitar and harmonica on track 4. In all it’s
a good CD, it seems to be growing on me the second
and third time thru – especially the two tracks
listed above (1 & 9). I heard sometime in May
’09 Gillian along with Steve Morris will be
playing tracks from both Deep Purple and 'One Eye
To Morocco' unplugged – that should be killer!
