BOTTOMS UP BLUES GANG :: BIO

Bottoms Up Blues GangThe Bottoms Up Blues Gang is St. Louis' Acoustic Blues Trio featuring vocalist Kari Liston, guitarist Jeremy Segel-Moss and Adam Andrews on harmonica. The BUBG play a unique blend of originals and covers in the styles of Delta Blues, R & B, Soul, Jazz, and Blues influenced Rock & Roll.

In the last five years The Bottoms Up Blues Gang has averaged 275 shows a year, released 3 albums, been awarded the People’s Choice Award for Acoustic Blues at the 2006 St. Louis Music Awards, and shared a bill with Chuck Berry, Robert Earl Keen, Bennie Smith, Debbie Davies, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Mofro, Parliament Funkadelic, as well as a host of St. Louis talent.

For a trio, The Bottoms Up Blues Gang has a big sound. Kari’s powerfully sultry voice rings with soul intention. Adam’s tone and sometimes-ferocious feeling compliments Kari’s vintage sound and stands out as a voice all his own. All the while Jeremy holds down the groove – covering bass lines and melody on his acoustic guitar.

The BUBG play with an ever-changing line up when performing in St. Louis. On any given night the band might include a stand up bass player, additional guitar or harmonica, a piano…even an electric Kazoo! And if The BUBG isn’t playing at one of their own gigs, there’s a good chance they’ll be out jammin’ with fellow St. Louis musicians.

During the last year the Bottoms Up Blues Gang has performed in many of the area's top venues, including the B.B.'s Jazz, Blues & Soups, the Broadway Oyster Bar, Blueberry Hill, the Venice Cafe, Pop's Blue Moon, Riddles Cafe, Mangia Italiano and many more. They were also featured at the 2002 Big Muddy Blues Festival and the 2002 Buck Dance Blues Festival. The BUBG have also performed with some of St. Louis' finest musicians, such as Bennie Smith and the Urban Express, Brian Curran, Mojo Syndrome, the Soulard Blues Band, Marsville, and Kim Massie.

The Bottoms Up Blues Gang is especially conscious about the importance of continuing the tradition of St. Louis music while trying to define a unique style of their own. Some of the musicians who frequent the BUBG stage include Adam Andrews, John Erblich, Matt Murdick, Eric McSpadden, Sharon Foehner and many more.

REVIEWS

St. Louis' Bottoms Up Blues Gang balance standards like "Mystery Train, "Ain't Nobody's Business," and "Just A Little Bit" with their own songs - a jaunty "Meet Me Out Back," the wobbly but true-to-life "First Time Blues."

Adam Andrews' busy harmonica and Jeremy Segel-Moss' lightly amplified guitar provide the foundation for the vocals of Kari Liston, whose pinched delivery gives her a vintage sound that suits the Gang's approach on their debut CD 'South Broadway Blues'.

"This local Blues trio, with Kari Liston’s commanding vocals, remind me a bit of an early Michelle Shocked or a youngish Bonnie Raitt. She is able to go from nasty to gutsy to melancholy with great ease. I could possibly marry this woman on those strengths alone! No, we have never actually met.

Adam Andrews plays harmonica. He does this very well. The rapport between him and Kari on these tunes is truly enjoyable. Very clean licks blending into the fills, he is the perfect balance to Ms. Kari's voice. Very steady, not walking on any vocals, he comes on with strong refreshing solos. He could be on the side of some berm road waiting on a ride or walking home in the rain. His reeds seem to echo the soul of the situation.

Jeremy Segel-Moss is the guitar vehicle that makes this blues cruise possible. Providing the platform for Ms. Kari and Adam, he does well playing his lead off both harp and vocals. With equal skill, whether it is a traditional Delta tune or some gutsy Urban blues, he keeps the band moving forward. At times when it seems the sound is being dominated by vocals and harp, you realize "Wow, that guitar was in the mix and WORKING all the time!" -- Jim Von Tellrop :: STLBlues Street Teamer
