March Madness – the final four to the two best, Illinois
and North Carolina. For us blues folks it was the Hot Buttery
Biscuits of Blues and the Rich McDonough Band.
With
family in tow we were able to catch most of the Biscuits. Man
are they smokin’ or what? They treated the basketball
going fans to hot blues with tastes of Albert Collins, Allman
Bros, Stevie Ray, Elvin Bishop and ZZ Top along with a long
playlist of great blues tunes. They played them all well. Larry
was sportin’ a new fretless Jazz Bass, hmm looks familiar,
Dave held nothin’ back playing electric, killer slide
and vocals that were – awesome! Rex kept good time. The
Biscuits seem to have a lot of fun and get the audience movin’
and feelin good. I foresee these fellows becoming the ambassadors
of the St. Louis Blues!
On
the flip side with the Mississippi River as a backdrop facing
a packed field Rich McDonough, Les Moore, Sharon Foehner and
Joe Pastor of the Rich McDonough Band reminded the out-of-town
visitors that St. Louis is home to some of the best blues musicians
bar none. These four musicians are strong solo, together they
are right on and sound outstanding. I can’t wait for a
CD from them. It was cool waiting on the MetroLink platform
with their music sounding great from afar and watching folks
look in their direction.
Without
a doubt non-bluesy college basketball lovers will be talking
about the music they heard while in St. Louis and maybe a little
hoops too.
