Otis Taylor’s Pentatonic Wars and Love
Songs on Telarc was released on June 23 in the same week
that several of Taylor’s songs were heard by millions in Michael
Mann’s film Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian
Bale.
The
album follows Taylor’s 2008 album Recapturing the Banjo, a
recording that celebrated the African roots of an instrument whose
origins have been largely obscured by its subsequent associations
with Appalachian Folk music. Earlier this year, Taylor received
a Blues Music Award for “Best Instrumentalist — Banjo.”
He quipped from the stage that this would break his losing streak
at the BMAs.
In
the first week that the Public Enemies trailer hit the screens,
“Ten Million Slaves” saw a 367% increase in digital
track sales over what had been sold in its prior 13 months of availability.
As the trailer aired for the next 17 weeks, it maintained at this
clip. When the movie opened last week, there was another 40% increase
to put it well over 14,000 downloads to date.
