Roy
Gaines Fires Up Valentine's Night @ BB's - By Shannon |
The
last thing I wanted to do was spend Valentine's evening in a bar,
but I figured what the heck!
I heard that legendary west coast bluesmen Roy Gaines was in town
and that persuaded me to head out and see some blues. I only stayed
one set, but I was truly impressed by this mans playing and ability.
Originally from Texas, Roy ventured to California at the age of
16. With T-Bone Walker being his biggest influence, it definitely
shows in his crowd-pleasing playing style and guitar licks.
He
has recorded with such musical greats as Ray Charles, Bobby "Blue"
Bland, and Aretha Franklin.
Roy
was the recipient of the 1999 Handy Award for "Most Deserving
of Wider Recognition" and in 2000, he was proclaimed by Living
Blues Magazine as "Most Outstanding Guitarist".
Amazon.com has some of Roy's compilations including the 2000 release
"New Frontier Lover".
You can learn more about Roy
Gaines right here! Though I didn't get to actually speak with
Mr. Gaines, he was more than willing to pose for some great pictures.
He is one excellent performer and my only regret is that I didn't
stay longer!
