The
City of Texas City, in conjunction with the Texas City Cultural Arts
Foundation, is pleased to announce The Charles Brown Music Festival,
an event honoring Texas City native, Charles Brown (September 13,
1922-January 21, 1999). The late great pianist has been heralded as
one of the most influential Blues artists of the 20th century. Some
of his achievements include The National Endowment for the Arts Heritage
Fellowship Award, a W.C. Handy Award, and being inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Festival will feature entertainment by
Sparky’s Jazz Express; the Zydeco Dots, voted best Zydeco
band at The Houston Press Music Awards; Blind Pig recording artist
and local favorite Hamilton Loomis. Coming in from the Crescent
City with a healthy dose of New Orleans funk will be Jon Cleary
and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. And, last but not least, from
Crowley, Louisiana, serving up a hearty gumbo of Rock, Cajun, and
Rhythm & Blues, will be “Le Boss,” Wayne Toups and
his band Zydecajun.
In addition to the musical entertainment,
there will be arts and crafts, concessions, and a children’s
area.
The festival takes place Saturday, October
25, at Nessler Park (9th Avenue North @ 21st Street) from 2:00 p.m.
– 10:00 p.m.
