Blind
Pig Records has signed an agreement with HDNet to produce
a television program tentatively entitled "Blues at the
Brewery." The ninety minute program will feature a live
concert by two of the best blues bands in the country - the
Tommy Castro Band and Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. The
show will be taped at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California
on Tuesday, March 22nd. Tickets for the show were sold out 31
minutes after going on sale.
The
Tommy Castro Band, renowned for their mesmerizing blend of rock,
blues, and Memphis soul, are currently on tour in support of
their latest album, Soul Shaker, which has been in the top ten
of the Billboard Blues Chart since its release in January. Evan
Haiman, Executive Producer of the "Blues at the Brewery"
program for HDNet, has previously worked with Castro's band
when he was producing "Comedy Showcase" for HBO and
NBC, where Tommy's group served as the house band.
Rod
Piazza and the Mighty Flyers are "one of the most popular
blues bands in the world," according to Blues Revue magazine.
Three-time winners of the prestigious "Blues Band of the
Year" W.C. Handy Award, the group of elite musicians packs
a punch of West Coast jump blues and swing powered by Piazza's
astonishing harmonica techniques and the two-fisted showmanship
of pianist extraordinaire Honey Piazza.
The
Sierra Nevada Brewery was chosen as the venue for the shoot
because its "Big Room" is a state-of-the art performance
theater ideal for live recording. Huey Lewis and the News recently
filmed their 25th anniversary concert there, and it's been the
setting for the on-going "Sierra Center Stage" series
of live concerts airing on the PBS network.
HDNet,
the leading high-definition television network, provides viewers
with exciting and topical news, sports, music and entertainment
programming. The network features up to 20 hours of original
programming each week, all produced in the highest quality 10801i
HDTV format - more original high-definition programming than
any other network. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks
NBA basketball team, is the network's co-founder, chairman,
and president. The program will premiere on HDNet at a date
and time to be announced soon.
Blind
Pig President Edward Chmelewski said, "We're thrilled to
be working with HDNet on the cutting edge of this new technology
that has great potential for the entertainment field. We've
put together a concert with two of the most solid, entertaining
bands in the roots music genre. And people will be able to see
and hear this music in a new way that will be just short of
actually being in the concert hall." Blind Pig plans to
release separate DVDs of the performances by the Tommy Castro
Band and Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers.
