ANITA
ROSAMOND OPENS CABARET IN BLUE SERIES APRIL 11 & 12
|
If
you're familiar with Savor Restaurant, located at 4356 Lindell,
about halfway between the Central West End and Grand Center, you
know its more than just a destination for a great meal. Head up
the stairs to Savors second floor and youll find an elegant space
that's home to Cabaret at Savor, an entertainment series that regularly
features some of the finest cabaret singers from Manhattan to San
Francisco on its entertainment schedule.
Okay, you're probably saying but what's that got to
do with Blues?
Everything, thanks to a new series that debuts next Friday and Saturday,
April 11 & 12 at the venue. St. Louis vocalist/pianist Anita
Rosamond will open a three concert series called Cabaret
In Blue that weekend. Classic blues music and the influence
of blues on all styles of American music -- will be showcased in
a setting that will bring the audience into an intimate atmosphere
thats as close to hearing music up close and personal as youre ever
likely to experience outside of your own living room. There are
only 65 seats at Cabaret at Savor and those seats are arrayed at
tables in a stepped theater setting that brings the audience so
close to the musicians that microphones and a PA system seem like
an after thought.
It's a creative approach to blues music thats never been tried before
in St. Louis but it seems exactly the right setting for talented
artists such as Anita Rosamond, Renee Smith and Uvee Hayes to weave
a magical, unforgettable take on the essence of the blues that's
sure to connect with the audience.
"We're trying something new with Cabaret in Blue", explains
series producer/director Jim Dolan. This new series will put three
wonderful blues and jazz singers into a new context: the intimacy
of The Cabaret at Savor. They will be singing in a blue hue -- but
with a grand piano and acoustic accompaniment in a cabaret style.
Look for blues and jazz, but with less rhythmic propulsion and more
focus on lyric and melody.
Anita Rosamond is primarily known as a vocalist who can sing EVERYTHING
well. Her acclaimed Timeless CD, which balances
jazz standards with winning interpretations of contemporary classics
by Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and Maria Muldaur, showcases
her versatility. But as anyone who has seen Rosamond live will tell
you, she has a voice that brims with soulful blues... and a performing
style that pulls in an audience like an electromagnet from the very
first note.
Rosamonds blues credentials were certified by critical acclaim for
her holiday recording, This is Christmas, which features stunning
versions of blues classics Merry Christmas Baby and Please
Come Home for Christmas, the latter featuring one of the finest
solos St. Louis guitar great Rich McDonough has ever recorded. Anita
will be backed by guitarist Shaun Robinson (lead guitarist with
Good 4 The Soul and Brian Owens) and special guest Sandy Weltman
on harmonica (as only Sandy can dish it out).
As Anita explains, this is a show that's built on the blues but
its all about the amazing influence of the blues on every style
of American music. "I was born in St. Louis, but grew up
in a small town in the south, she recalls. So I came to blues music
in a roundabout way I heard what blues brought to pop, rock and
jazz before I heard the REAL blues when I moved back to St. Louis.
So this is a personal story about my relationship to the blues and
especially to St. Louis blues artists. I hope everyone who loves
the blues will come and maybe my take on the blues will help people
realize its at the root of every style of American music"
